"I came for you."THE STORY: In 1099 England, Lady Madelyne risks her life to save her brother's enemy Baron Duncan of Wexton. What she doesn't know is that he has planned her abduction in revenge for the rape of his own sister. Very quickly, Duncan realizes what a gentle and caring soul, Madelyne is and realizes that he doesn't want to bargain with her but rather keep her for himself.
OPINION: The strength of this book is how gentle, caring and strong Madelyn is and how Duncan recognizes her unique nature and treats her incredibly well. Many times in these historicals, the hero treats the heroine roughly. Here, Duncan is incredibly protective of Madelyne even though she is the sister of his enemy. Their sweet and loving relationship allows Madelyne to grow and recognize her own worth which she doubts based upon her life. Madelyne also makes immense changes in the life of Duncan. This is an relationship where the two characters are respectful to one another. There is a drama over Madelyne's abduction and the dangers from her brother, but most of the story is the drama of these two people changing their lives together.
WORTH MENTIONING: There are non-graphic discussions of rape and one of the supporting characters is dealing with the aftermath.
FINAL DECISION: This was a book where I really liked the heroine. She is gentle and yet strong. I thought her character interesting and different from the standard heroine. The romance between the two main characters was wonderful because it was based on gentleness.
CONNECTED BOOKS: This is a standalone.
STAR RATING: I give this book 4 stars.

I go through about 3 books a week. Before the end of chapter 3, I had a lump in my throat and shed a tear for the heroine's first trial! The book didn't have the usual bickering to develop the characters. That was wonderful!!!!!
Both hero and heroine were strong spirits that knew each other from the start. The use of a completely honest, guileless lady who was strong, yet innocent, had me attached to her through the whole book. Her intelligence was refreshing! To have a worthy hero, he was highly principled, but needed time to come to terms with his love. With the help of a great family and dedicated men, they learn that love doesn't require weakness.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! I read it in 36 hours, and will reread it again soon.
Duncan and Madelyne are a very sweet couple. The opening scene stole my heart and I was sold on her! I thought the back and fourth between the characters was entertaining and funny. The amazing characteristics they portrayed were warming, sweet and endearing. There was a good plot and Loudonn was a great villain! I found the book enchanting and was engrossed in the story the entire time.
I have all of Ms. Garwood's historical/period books. Honor's Splendour and The Prize are my favorites. I was saddened when she quit writing period books and started writing contemporary novels. In my opinion the contemporary books are not as good as her historical ones. I like all of her historical novels, some I love, and several are in my re-read collection. If you read this one you will be hooked. I promise. In my opinion she is the Grand Dame of period romances.
BTW I did read on the net that she was returning back to her true gift, historicals. I really hope this is true.
Good reading to all,
retired to read
I love Julie Garwood she did not disappoint with “Honor’s Splendour.” This book had everything that made it a great read for me.
Madelyne was a great character, she was just so blunt and adorably clueless at times. She was funny, sweet, and just so likable. As I was reading I was so eager to see what she would do next because she’s that character, the one that keeps your interest in the story.
Duncan made it on my book boyfriend list. He’s this great warrior who doesn’t show a lot of emotions, he’s all about honor and duty but with Madelyne he’s just a big teddy bear. I loved those two. The pace of their relationship was perfect and when they finally got together, oh the feels.
This story just did it for me, great pacing, love, danger, treachery, good conquering evil, amazing complex characters, and I loved reading the little quotes at the beginning of each chapter. Overall amazing read.
My absolute favorite book of all time!!! This book is very special to me because it was written by my favorite author Julie Garwood. Every time I'm feeling blue I read this book. It just makes me feel so good. Its romantic, sexy, funny, sad, and action packed. Its a beautiful love story like no other. The heroine Madelyn is beautiful, loving, courageous, smart, and very loyal. Duncan who is to me every woman's FANTASY!!! Tall, dark, and SEXY as hell!!! Duncan makes the perfect hero. He is brave, strong, smart, caring, and fearless. They say opposites attract, and I couldn't agree more because these two are perfect examples. They share some fine qualities such as courage and loyalty, but together as one they create a love that's timeless...
Hatred, deception, envy, and cruelty are the daily trials faced by Madelyne at the hand of her brother, Louddan. Who knew that his cruelty would be the cause for Madelyn finding love at the hands of his enemy, Baron Wexton?
This story hearkens back to the wonderful historicals of my youth, yet it is as fresh today as when it was written some 30 years ago. Good stories will always be good stories. This one took me on an exciting adventure as Madelyne found herself and true love, and Baron Weston found more than he ever bargained for, finding his true treasure.
I'm late to finding Ms. Garwood's work. Trust me when I say I'll be catching up very soon. It's a lot like finding buried treasure when you discover a "new to you author" and I'm preparing for my next treasure hunt as we speak!
