Robert Burns edition by John Campbell Shairp Reference eBooks

I read this book, and thought that literary scholar John Campbell Shairp did a masterful job in detailing the Burns' life in panorama. He brought out not only the tasteful and good of the man, but painted graciously the negatives as well. I only wished he could have told us more detail about the personal side of Burns' home life, his relationships with his grown siblings, and his children. These are details perhaps omitted from his text, and maybe told by other biographers of the bard whom I have not read.

Robert Burns edition by John Campbell Shairp Reference eBooks Reviews

This book, written by a Scottish scholar who died in 1885, was savaged in a review by the poet James Thomson, who accused Shairp of being a prudish prig who condemned all of Burns' erotic poetry, and who left out all of the less virtuous episodes of his life.
From an amateur Historians point of view the work is pretty good in that it gives one sense of Burns' Family, social environment as well as other factors that influenced his work!
