Not so long ago we leave Endurance Island, and our favorite lovebirds, Abby and Dean on a beach in the Cook Islands as they share nuptials. But now, Jessica Clare (aka Jill Myles) is back with Playing Games, her sequel to Wicked Games. She hasn't given up on reality television as a setting yet either as this novel picks up with Katy Short auditioning for the next season of Endurance Island (think Survivor) with her self-centered brother, Brody.Alas, it isn't meant to be and Brody and Katy aren't cast but, luckily for us, the readers, they are selected for The World Races (which is oddly reminiscent to The Amazing Race). When she and her brother win an unexpected reward, Brody thinks only of his own ulterior motive, namely to bed a certain celebrity also cast on the show, and Katy is paired up with the only man she never wanted to partner with - Liam Brogan, the lead guitarist of a rock band. Liam has already made his impression of the pig-tailed, Oklahoma lass the producers have portrayed. Katy, on the other hand wants to give up and go home and were it not for the help the prize money would give her failing cupcake business, she would do exactly that.
I absolutely loved Wicked Games and was thrilled to see Abby and Dean make an appearance in Playing Games as well but it was fun to greet the new characters. Ms. Clare did a great job of making these main characters just as memorable as Abby and Dean without making them similar in the slightest. While Abby and Katy become friends, they aren't mirror image characters yet both are strong, intelligent women who know what they want, and how to get it. Liam and Dean are both male characters women will fall for but without being cliché. It was refreshing to find an author that could make a fun plot that I wanted to finish in a day. I didn't want to put it down and, honestly, with my busy schedule I can't afford the time to read books that don't keep me intrigued, interested and invested in the characters and the plot.
Playing Games, while a fun book and a quick, interesting read did suffer from what I call "sequel-itis," which merely means, as terrific as it was, it didn't quite measure up to the first book. However, I would still recommend it highly (hence, the 4 Star rating), but I would recommend the first book (Wicked Games even more). Either book is a fun, satirical view of romance in reality shows and I know I'll never watch one the same way again.

Playing Games Games series Book 2 edition by Jessica Clare Jill Myles Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
GREAT! My favorite plot formula Don't like each other -> get to the know each other -> fall in love. Such a fun one! Katy is a baker who joins the reality show World Races with her brother because Brodie wants to be a reality star. Once there, Brodie behaves like a jerk and gets their team split up and switched with another team. Katy is now partnered with a so-not-her-type rock star; Liam. We see Abby and Dean from the previous story, which is fun! This book had a lot of movement in the plot, they are traveling and changing location. Their chemistry was really strong and the characters behavior felt realistic. The plot didn't rely on convenience and did have friction as needed. Moved along well. I was very pleased with it! Immediately bought the next in the series!
A cute, light and fun read, I actually liked it a lot more than the first one. Katy is a really funny, strong, likeable heroine, she wasn't winy or exasperating at all. I never once wanted to smack some sense into her, which is a rare thing for me with the contemporary heroines.
And Liam? Well, what's not to love in a hot guitarist of a rock band, who happens to have an apadravya piercing, and several other ones too? )
I'm glad I got to meet with the main characters from the Wicked Games, and that Katy and Liam will appear in the Bedroom Games too.
Even though I'm not so much (or at all) a reality show fan, I enjoyed the first two book, especially this one, and will keep reading the series for more.
***Warning do not read this review if you haven't read Wicked Games, the first book in this series.***
So, confession time. I totally read these books out of order. I knew they were part of a trilogy. I received an ARC of Ice Games through Goodreads and decided I needed to pick up the first two books before I read and reviewed that one. I bought the books. Then I read the second one before the first. Sigh. Yeah, yeah, they're standalones, but the characters from the first book reappear in the second. Needless to say, I kind of took any surprise out of the first book by knowing Dean and Abby were a couple. But, I digress.
"Maybe she's cranky because her brother abandoned her to hook up with a hot girl." The voice was deep and smooth and held just a hint of reproach. "I imagine that anyone would be in a bad mood if that happened to them. She got sold out by her partner."
Katy Short's brother Brodie has dreams of being on reality TV. He convinces her to audition for him for a spot on Endurance Island. The producers don't select him for that show, but they love the idea of teaming Katy and Brodie up for The World Races (cough, The Amazing Race, cough). She's not sold on the idea, but Brodie convinces her to do it. The prize money is tempting. It could really help her to continue growing her bakery. Katy agrees to join him on the show and makes an unexpected game move that splits their team and gives them both new partners. Brodie is an ass.
All that said, Katy definitely got the better end of the split. Instead of being paired with her self-centered brother, she's teamed with sexy, pierced, tattooed rock star Liam Brogan, who was forced into the show by his label. Katy thinks Liam is a stereotypical conceited jerk rock star. She couldn't be more wrong. He doesn't fit the rock star stereotype. He's sweet and thoughtful. Liam is a good guy. While neither of them were on the show because they wanted to be, they decided to make the best of it, "make good TV," and see how long they could stay in the game. Along the way, their attraction for each other grew and eventually they gave in to their desires.
The chemistry between Katy and Liam was totally believable. Their dialogue was realistic and funny. The love scenes were scorching hot. As they continued on in the game, lust turned to something more and the "is this real or just for show" insecurities set in for both of them.
"Everything's all wrong. All wrong, and I don't know how to fix it. All I know is that I don't know if I can trust Katy, and that makes me so goddamn miserable I can't stand it. I'm in love with her and I don't know if I'm being played for a fool."
I really liked Katy and Liam. I had to root for them to get together, and hopefully win the game while they were at it. I'm always a sucker for a "showmance" in my reality TV watching. I liked Abby and Dean a lot. I loved to hate Brodie and Tesla. I loved following the drama and the awful challenges. Honestly, I just really enjoyed pretty much everything about this book.
I picked this novel up originally because I wanted to read the first two before reviewing the ARC of Ice Games and I really didn't know what to expect. I had never read a book by this author before. I was more than pleasantly surprised by every book in this series. I'm anxiously awaiting the release of the fourth novel, Bedroom Games, in 2014. If you like sexy, sweet New Adult romances and reality shows, do yourself a favor and give this series a chance.
